Education and Training on Women’s Health Issues and their Impact on Social, Cultural, Mental, and Biological Wellbeing

Good health is not necessarily just the lack of disease, it also includes physical, mental, and social wellbeing. As such, we must remember that women’s health goes beyond reproductive health and is influenced by social, cultural, mental, and biological factors. In order to prepare a workforce that is sensitized to women’s health issues and also has the necessary education and training, the medical school curricula need to include women’s health, wellbeing and other issues. Additionally, women need to be empowered by community education initiatives to take advantage of and become advocates for all available avenues for health and wellbeing.

Women’s health and wellbeing is a multidimensional topic that needs to be emphasized in the published literature. Outside of reproductive health issues and education, many of these topics could be enhanced to provide due emphasis in not just the medical curricula, but also the scientific literature. Only a handful of medical schools have women’s health curricula, and even fewer offer specific clinical rotations related to women’s health (outside the obstetrics and gynecology clerkships) or have programs responsible for integrating women's health and gender-based information into their curricula. Progress is needed in both research, education, and training to bring attention to this topic and improve women’s health and wellbeing. Thus, this Article Collection aims to collate articles contributed by like-minded researchers, clinicians, medical educators interested in the field.

This Article Collection will focus on women’s health education issues and solutions from the perspective of research, education, and training of health care students, residents and practitioners, and empowerment of the community through education and promoting advocacy.

Original research articles, review articles, short and rapid communications and book reviews focusing on education and training of community, students, residents, physicians and other health professionals including public health, will be considered for inclusion.

Suggested relevant health and wellbeing education topics include but are not limited to: sex and gender-specific education on physical and mental health; fertility, menopause, pregnancy and childbirth; breast health; mental health and stress management at home and at work; workplace burnout; prevalent health, economic, social and political concerns that impact the wellbeing of women, etc.
