Advanced Materials for Biomedical Applications

Biomedical industries are today faced with the urgent necessity of multiscale and multifunctional materials to repair damaged tissue or to boost the functional recovery of an organ due to the aging of modern societies and the rising occurrence of civilization-related disorders. The advancement of multiscale and multifunctional materials synthesis, production, and characterization techniques, as well as the target application in regenerative medicine, have all contributed to the field of biomedical materials’ excellent development. Due to their unique combination of mechanical and biological properties to direct and regulate their interaction with specific target molecules, cells, and tissues, multifunctional materials are attracting interest in various biomedical applications.

They thus serve as adaptable platforms for a variety of uses that have the potential to be applied in a wide range of biomedical fields, such as for the development of implants, drug- and gene-delivery systems, tissue-repair scaffolds, bioimaging, devices, instruments, and bio-sensors. This Article Collection on “Advanced Materials for Biomedical Applications” focuses on research on the design, synthesis, and fabrication of multifunctional materials and their physicochemical and biological characterization.

Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Bioactive materials and substances (Bio-metallic alloys, polymers, ceramics)
  • Structure and properties of biological materials
  • Processing of Biomaterials
  • Bioceramics and Biocomposites
  • Inorganic Biomaterials: Natural and Synthetic Approaches
  • 3D printing and additive manufacturing of biomaterials
  • Microporous, mesoporous, and nano-porous biomaterials
  • Functional surface and their performance: Wear, corrosion, Fatigue
  • Phase transitions, reconstruction, roughening and melting
  • Surface Engineering: Coatings/Deposition/Diffusion/Finishing
  • Glass-ceramics for dental restoration applications
