Mitochondria as a Powerhouse of Immunity

Mitochondria, the “powerhouses of the cell”, have recently been recognized to actively participate in regulating immune responses. They are crucial for the activation and signaling pathways of immune cells, such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and lymphocytes. Mitochondria contribute to the production of reactive oxygen species that aid in pathogen destruction, and they shape the metabolic environment necessary for immune cell activation and proliferation. Mitochondria also play a critical role in modulating the balance between inflammation and tolerance, thereby influencing the overall immune response. This collection will cover all aspects of the intricate connections between mitochondria and immunity, among them potential new avenues for therapeutics to enhance immune function and combat various diseases.
