The population of aging adults is increasing worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (2022), the number of those aged 60 and above will double between the years 2015 and 2050. Health considerations are important to transition into life’s later years, and to support those in the aging community.
Addressing levels of physical activity, changes in cognition, healthy eating, and access to healthcare such as preventative medicine, chronic disease management, and physician recommendations will help facilitate healthier and happier aging. Equally important, aging well encompasses financial awareness and knowledge, social connection, cultural needs, occupational well-being, emotional care, intellectual development, and spiritual resources. Taken together, these drivers to help age well may mitigate maladaptive coping strategies, social isolation, and loneliness, ultimately allowing adults to live well, long, healthy lives.
In this article collection, we look to understand the lived experiences of aging adults across topics such as intimacy and closeness and to learn from leaders who serve older adults in settings including at-home in the community, nursing homes, hospitals, and senior centers. We also welcome insights from experts abreast of the changing landscape of today’s aging population. Taken together, this collection will help to more deeply understand and serve our aging community members.
