Present and future contribution of vaccines to tackle antibiotic resistance spread and evolution

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will continue to be one of the biggest challenges to public health in the coming decades. Antibiotic overuse has led to the emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens causing diseases that cannot be managed with current treatment options. Vaccines will undoubtedly play a major role in tackling AMR and reducing antibiotic use. In this Special Issue we solicit articles that address:

  • Development of vaccines against antibiotic-resistant pathogens
  • Modelling of impact of AMR vaccines
  • Regulatory aspects of vaccine implementation
  • Cost-effectiveness of AMR vaccines

Submission information:

  • Select "Present and future contribution of vaccines to tackle antibiotic resistance spread and evolution" when submitting your paper to the Submission Portal
  • Research papers, Reviews and Commentaries will be considered for publication
  • Papers will be published online as they are accepted

Summary:

This Special Issue will summarize the development of vaccines against antibiotic-resistant pathogens and show future R&D directions to control AMR.

The emergence of ‘superbugs’ due to antibiotic overuse is one of the WHO’s top ten health threats. These bacteria, which cannot be treated with conventional antibiotics, can be overwhelmingly found in hospitals, posing risk to the most vulnerable. Vaccines are the perfect tool to tackle antimicrobial resistance: preventing infection not only protects the patient but it also avoids the need to use antibiotics, which only amplify the problem for future generations.

This Special Issue will summarize the state of development of vaccines against antibiotic-resistant pathogens and show future research directions to control this problem.
