Development of Novel Treatments for Genitourinary Tumors

Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, in conjunction with Guest Advisor Dr. Alessandro Rizzo, is pleased to announce a new Article Collection dedicated to new and novel immunotherapies targeting genitourinary tumors.

Genitourinary tumors encompass a broad range of cancer types within the urinary system and male reproductive system and there is a plethora of novel investigational drugs under current clinical development for future treatments. Candidate drugs can range from Von Hippel–Lindau inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates, anti-angiogenesis tyrosine kinase inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and mTOR inhibitors, with each presenting important differences and considerations for individual tumors and when used in combination therapies.

Genitourinary cancers account for 1 in 8 of all cancer diagnoses globally, with close to 800,000 deaths annually. They present not only a major health burden on both men and women, but also a major economic burden. With recent advances in genitourinary tumor biology and immunotherapeutic treatments, new hope is on the horizon. This Collection aims to cover recent progress of investigational drugs and the implications on the future clinical development across all types of genitourinary cancers, in urinary systems of both men and women and the reproductive organs in men.

We welcome authors to submit relevant commentaries, reviews, case reports, drug analyses, product reviews, brief reports, mini reviews, and original research.  Papers will treat topics such as Bladder, Kidney, Penile, Prostate, and Testicular tumors. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that address (but not limited to) the following:

  • The use of intravesical therapy to treat bladder cancer
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors
  • Comboimmunotherapeutic strategies to treat genitourinary tumors
  • Clinical trial data
  • Novel druggable targets and genitourinary tumor biology updates
  • CAR-T Cell Therapy
  • Neoadjuvant vs. Adjuvant Therapy
  • Current challenges and future directions of immunotherapy
  • Oncolytic Virotherapy

Keywords: Renal Cell Carcinoma; Urothelial Carcinoma; Prostate Cancer; Penile Cancer; Testicular Cancer
