Human Computer Interaction and Applied Artificial Intelligence: Interfaces, Ethics, and Emerging Applications
Human–computer interaction (HCI) and applied artificial intelligence (AI) are converging to transform how humans engage with digital systems, decision-making tools, and interactive environments. From conversational agents and multimodal interfaces to immersive environments powered by augmented and virtual reality, the design of human–AI interactions is becoming increasingly critical in ensuring usability, accessibility, and trustworthiness. As applied AI continues to expand across diverse domains, including healthcare, education, sustainability, governance, and industry, the interaction layer serves as a crucial bridge between technical systems and end-users. This Article Collection will provide a platform for innovative research on user-centred, explainable, and ethically grounded AI-driven systems that impact real-world practices.
Despite rapid advances in applied AI, challenges persist in translating technical innovation into systems that are intuitive, equitable, and beneficial for users. Poorly designed interaction paradigms can limit adoption, introduce bias, and erode trust. Conversely, well-crafted interfaces can democratize access, enhance decision-making, and ensure inclusivity across populations. In high-stakes environments, such as clinical care, smart city planning, industrial operations, and education, the consequences of interaction design are amplified, requiring rigorous approaches to usability, ethics, privacy, and explainability. By bringing together contributions from HCI, AI, behavioural sciences, and ethics, this Collection will highlight how interdisciplinary insights can shape applied AI to be not only technically robust but also socially responsible and user-centred.
This Article Collection aims to advance both theoretical understanding and practical solutions, showcasing how human-centred design can transform applied AI into technologies that are reliable, transparent, and aligned with societal values. We invite original research articles, reviews, case studies, and application-focused perspectives addressing the intersection of applied AI and human–computer interaction. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: interactive design methodologies for AI-driven systems; multimodal and adaptive interfaces; conversational AI and large language models in applied contexts; visualization and decision support for complex data; ethical and epistemic challenges in human–AI collaboration; trust, privacy, and regulatory frameworks; assistive technologies for accessibility and inclusion; immersive environments for education, training, and industry; behavioural and cognitive aspects of interacting with AI systems; and cross-sector applications spanning healthcare, sustainability, and digital governance.
Keywords: Human–computer interaction, Applied Artificial Intelligence, User-centred design, Explainable and trustworthy AI, Multimodal interfaces
