Registered Reports and Data Notes within Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for an Article Collection on Registered Reports and Data Notes within Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine. This Article Collections aims to showcase examples of Registered Reports and Data Notes as new article formats within the journal of Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine, aiming to increase transparency and replicability of the research process.

Registered Reports are a form of empirical article in which the methods and proposed analyses are pre-registered and reviewed prior to the research being conducted. High quality protocols are then provisionally accepted for publication (Stage 1 acceptance) before data collection commences. Acceptance in principle indicates that the article will be published pending successful completion of the study according to the pre-registered methods and analytic procedures, as well as inclusion of a defensible and evidence-based interpretation of the results (Stage 2 acceptance).

Data Notes are a short, peer-reviewed article type that concisely describe a research dataset stored in an open repository, such as Open Science Framework. Data Notes describe an open dataset in-full and do not include any interpretation or conclusion of the data.

Open Science practices represent a paradigm shift in scholarly research, promoting transparency, reproducibility, replicability, and accessibility. Open Science practices play a vital role throughout the entire research project lifecycle, spanning design, conduct, analysis, reporting, and publishing. The establishment of Registered Reports and Open Data Notes as new article formats within Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine reflects an ongoing commitment of the journal to support and promote Open Science practices.

This article collection is being run in collaboration with the European Health Psychology Society’s Open Science Special Interest Group.

Submissions of Stage 1 Registered Reports and Data Notes relating to all methodologies and aspects of health psychology and behavioral medicine will be considered. Topics considered by the journal include:

  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Narratives, experiences, and discourses of health and illness
  • Treatment processes and recovery
  • Health cognitions and behaviors at population and individual levels
  • Psychosocial and behavioral prevention interventions
  • Psychosocial determinants and consequences of behavior
