Future Challenges in GIScience-Based Sustainable Tourism for the 21st Century: New approaches and Relevant Case Studies

Tourism is one of the main (and in some cases the most important) economic assets for many countries. As a result, there is a wide range of literature about, among other things, the economic, urban, and societal impacts of tourism, the development opportunities it presents, and the challenges and interconnected trends which accompany tourism globally. Nevertheless, the analysis and evaluation of these issues is rarely done from a spatial perspective allowing the interrelation between tourism and other elements to be quantified on the ground.

With this aim in mind, this Article Collection seeks to explore tourism from the perspective of GIS analysis and remote sensing: what are the various impacts, how do they manifest themselves, and to which current and future phenomena should researchers and planners be paying attention? Important questions to be addressed include the extent to which tourism is affecting our cities, the impact it can have on natural protected areas, and how the appearance of platforms like Airbnb has affected and continued to affect the real estate market. All are issues in which spatial analysis can shed light, and can help innovate in a space in which other approaches may not be such effective research tools.

This Article Collection therefore seeks contributions involving relevant experiences and case studies, innovative frameworks, or new analysis methodologies in topics such as:

  • Coastal sun & beach mass tourism impacts
  • Gentrification the real estate issues in downtowns and historic centers of cities
  • Landscape impacts and tourism exploitation in protected areas
  • Management of rural destinations
  • Impact in cities of tourism linked to P2P platforms such as Airbnb
  • Best governance & sustainable management models

Ground-breaking methods, frameworks or significant results from relevant case studies related to all these topics are particularly welcome, but similar submissions may also be considered for publication if they fit within the scope of this collection.
