Frontiers in Extreme Weather and Climate Events
Extreme events such as floods, tropical cyclones, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires are of major concern due to their strong impacts on society, the economy, and the environment. Despite significant progress, gaps remain in understanding their drivers, variability, and predictability. Therefore, understanding their behavior, causes, and evolution remains a challenging area of active research.
This Article Collection brings together short, letter-style contributions presenting new and novel results on extreme events. We welcome cutting-edge studies based on observations, analytical approaches, and numerical modeling that improve our understanding of these events.
Main themes include, but are not limited to:
- Predictability: advances in forecasting extreme events, early warning approaches, and risk estimation
- Physics and dynamics: mechanisms driving extremes, including atmospheric, oceanic, land-surface, and human-related influences
- Characteristics and variability: spatial and temporal patterns, trends, and regional-scale behavior of extreme events
The focus is on concise, high-impact studies that provide new insights into extreme events and their role in society and the environment. Manuscripts should be in the ‘Rapid Communications’ format: short and focused with rapid dissemination of results. Further information about the Rapid Communications article type can be found here.
