Fish Mitochondrial Genomics and Biodiversity: New Resources for Phylogenetics and Evolutionary Insight
Mitochondrial genomics has become an essential tool in fish biology, offering detailed insights into species identification, evolutionary relationships, and biodiversity patterns. This Article Collection, "Fish Mitochondrial Genomics and Biodiversity: New Resources for Phylogenetics and Evolutionary Insight," aims to highlight recent advances in mitochondrial DNA sequencing, genome assembly, and data curation specific to fish species. We seek studies that provide novel fish mitochondrial genome resources, elucidate phylogenetic relationships among diverse fish taxa, and reveal adaptive or biogeographic patterns. Emphasis is on high-quality datasets that enhance global mitochondrial databases and support long-term fish biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts.
Understanding fish biodiversity and evolutionary relationships is essential in a world facing rapid environmental changes, habitat loss, and declining fish populations. Mitochondrial genomes provide a powerful, standardized tool for accurately identifying fish species, clarifying their evolutionary histories, and uncovering hidden or cryptic diversity within aquatic ecosystems. These insights are critical for developing effective conservation strategies, monitoring fish populations, and ensuring sustainable fisheries management. As high-throughput sequencing becomes more accessible, expanding mitochondrial datasets for fish species helps fill taxonomic gaps and promotes interdisciplinary research in fish phylogenomics, ecology, and evolution. This collection offers vital genomic resources to advance our understanding of fish diversity and adaptation.
This collection centers on the generation, analysis, and application of fish mitochondrial genome data to enhance phylogenetic, taxonomic, and evolutionary research across diverse fish species. We invite submissions that feature complete or partial fish mitogenome sequences, comparative analyses of mitochondrial gene organization, and studies on mitochondrial gene evolution and structural variation. Particular interest is placed on research integrating mitogenomic data with biodiversity assessments, especially from underexplored or ecologically important regions. Suitable article types include Genome Reports, Original Articles, and Short Communications that contribute valuable genomic resources and insights within the scope of Mitochondrial DNA Part B: Resources.
Keywords:
