Epidermolysis Bullosa: Updates in Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Therapy

The Journal of Dermatological Treatment is pleased to invite you to submit your research to the upcoming Article Collection “Epidermolysis Bullosa: Updates in Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Therapy” organized by Guest Advisors Professor Dedee Murrell and Professor Jemima Mellerio.

The last few decades have witnessed great progress in the field of the genetic skin fragility disorder, epidermolysis bullosa (EB). From unravelling of the molecular genetics of the many different forms of the condition, research has moved on to explore disease mechanisms at a transcriptomic and proteomic level. In turn, this research has identified potential targets for new therapies and drug repurposing.  Today, the research and clinical trial landscape in EB encompasses many different approaches to treat symptoms and complications of disease. Some of which include gene therapy and editing, protein replacement, cell therapy approaches, read through drugs and repurposing of other treatments used in inflammatory and other skin diseases. Despite the challenges of rare disease clinical trials and drug approval for researchers, pharmaceutical companies and regulators, the landscape in EB is fertile and encouraging with the first new EB therapies recently approved and licensed.

This Article Collection welcomes all relevant original research articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses related but not limited to:

  • Diagnosis
  • Management
  • Treatment
  • Pathogenesis
  • Genotypes and phenotypes

Guest Advisor Prof. Murrell has over 30 years' experience working with epidermolysis bullosa, from UNC-Chapel Hill to Rockefeller University, NY. She established the EB Diagnostic Lab, EB registry and specialist EB clinics in Australia. She has published monographs and a book on EB, up-to-date chapters and over 50 original papers related to genotype-phenotype, outcome measures and treatments for EB. She developed and validated the QOLEB and EBDASI scores which are in use in the clinical trials for EB, such as the FDA and EMA recently approved therapies.

Guest Advisor Prof. Mellerio is based at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London where she leads the Adult Epidermolysis Bullosa Service and clinics for children and adults with other genetic skin diseases. She has a research background in basic science research in EB and in clinical EB research, including clinical trials.  She is also the Chief Investigator of a prospective register study exploring the natural history of recessive dystrophic EB (PEBLES).
