Cogent Mental Health

Aiming to address the well-documented disparities in mental health and well-being, as well as in the access to and quality of mental health care (MHC) for individuals who identify with one or more historically underrepresented and marginalized social identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, national origin and language, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious identity etc.), Cogent Mental Health is inviting submissions for an article collection focused on “Enhancing Equity” in mental health and MHC.

We are interested in a broad range of empirical papers (including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches) that will improve our understanding of the unique mental health needs, values, and preferences of underserved and marginalized populations; the mental health and MHC disparities faced by these populations as a result of marginalization and oppression; specific social determinants of such disparities; and interventions, strategies, and processes that can enhance equity in MHC access and treatment for diverse patient populations.

This Article Collection will solicit articles related to the following subjects. However, we welcome all submissions related to the umbrella topic of enhancing equity in MHC.

• Rigorous examinations of the MHC needs, values, and preferences of diverse patient populations, alongside the systemic barriers often faced by underserved and marginalized populations
• Examinations of predictors of mental health and MHC disparities, with the ultimate goal of helping to reduce/eliminate such factors and the consequential harm
• Effectiveness of adapting and tailoring MHC systems, treatments, and practices to enhance equity and better address the needs of diverse patient populations
• Examinations of novel strategies for training MHC professionals to enhance their ability to provide culturally sensitive and tailored services
• Examinations of within-group differences and intersectionality that can enhance the effectiveness and precision of prevention and/or treatment efforts

The following Article Types will be considered: basic and clinical, as well as epidemiological original research, meta-analyses, systematic and scoping reviews, and narrative reviews. When submitting your article, please select, ‘Enhancing Equity in Mental Health and Mental Health Care for Historically Underserved and Marginalized Populations’ from the drop-down menu within the submission system.
