Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development

The integration of emerging technologies in sustainable development has become a critical focus in recent years. As the global community attempts to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), renewable energy solutions, and advanced data analytics offer transformative potential. These technologies improve efficiencies and permit more sustainable practices across energy, agriculture, transportation, and education sectors. However, deploying these technologies also presents challenges, from infrastructure needs to ethical considerations regarding data usage and environmental impact. This Article Collection invites contributions that explore the role of emerging technologies in achieving SDGs relevant to the domains of environmental science, environmental health, natural resources production, use, and management, food production and security, and sustainable cities and communities. Contributions that highlight both opportunities and challenges, present recent developments, as well as reveal existing gaps and limitations and examining how emerging technologies can help address them are encouraged. By examining real-world applications, theoretical frameworks, and future trends, this Collection aims to advance the conversation on how technology can create a more sustainable and equitable world.

The pressure of addressing global sustainability challenges and achieving SDGs is more significant than ever, with climate change, resource diminution, and social inequalities threatening the stability and well-being of societies worldwide. Emerging technologies play a pivotal role in ensuring environmental health, development of sustainable cities and communities, effective food production and security, efficient natural resources use and management, and in achieving sustainable development. They can lead to eco-conscious improvements and influence various aspects including the creation of new holistic approaches, improvement of waste and resource management methods, optimization of energy generation and distribution, realization of a circular economy, and enhancement of life cycle assessment. Emerging technologies are crucial to undertaking these complex issues by enabling efficient resource management, reducing environmental impact, and fostering innovation across industries. Understanding how these technologies can be implemented responsibly and equitably is crucial to ensuring the benefits reach all parts of society, especially marginalized communities. This Article Collection is essential because it focuses on achieving environmental related SDGs and seeks to explore the intersection of emerging technologies and sustainability, providing insights that can guide policymakers, researchers, and industries toward a more sustainable and resilient future.

This Article Collection explores the intersection of emerging technologies and sustainable development, covering various topics related to technology, sustainability, and the environment. Submissions may address the application of technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, blockchain, machine learning, IoT, precision agriculture, renewable energy systems, and smart cities in advancing sustainable practices. We welcome research on the role of technology in areas such as climate action, biodiversity conservation, waste management, circular economy, energy transition, and sustainable agriculture. Subtopics may include technological adoption's ethical, social, and economic implications and case studies demonstrating successful technology-driven sustainability initiatives. The Collection accepts original research articles, empirical studies, review papers, and case studies, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of how cutting-edge innovations can contribute to achieving the UN's SDGs. This Collection fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange across fields by focusing on these areas.
