Determinants of Embryo Transfer Success

The assisted reproductive technology (ART) of embryo transfer (ET) is deceptively simple, in that the procedure itself is usually relatively straightforward. However, its success depends upon many facets of patient treatment, particularly when considering its application to in vitro maturation (IVM) and frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. Furthermore, a plethora of associated interventions, from assisted hatching to endometrial scratching and injection of various substances into the uterine cavity, have been explored to hopefully improve ET success rates. Therefore, this collection of articles aims to cover those elements most relevant to achieving a successful ET and help resolve the many controversies surrounding this important subject.

The transfer of embryos constitutes the ultimate and, therefore, most critical step of the ART process. Hence, suboptimal patient management, unnecessary intervention or poor technique can compromise all the good work preceding an ET. Furthermore, appropriate management of luteal support is necessary to maximise the chance of success and minimise the risk of adverse clinical and perinatal outcomes, particularly within IVM and FET cycles.

The subject of this article collection is the assisted reproductive technology of embryo transfer.

The subtopics of this collection include the following:

  1. Training, competency and variations in ET technique
  2. Pre-transfer culture media and ET catheters
  3. Embryo and endometrial interventions directly associated with ET
  4. Luteal support in fresh, frozen-thawed and IVM cycles
  5. Clinical and perinatal outcomes of autologous, donor and surrogate cycles

Preferred article types include basic and clinical research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
