Communicating with Young People

Tailored health communication and support for health literacy in young people is foundational to their physical, mental and social wellbeing. Young people navigate health information and healthcare systems during critical periods of cognitive, emotional and social development. Communication that is accessible and responsive to their needs can improve engagement, shared decision-making, autonomy and long-term health outcomes, while also addressing health inequities.

This Article Collection of Health Literacy and Communication Open focuses on ‘communicating with young people’, exploring how effective and developmentally appropriate communication and health literacy strategies can support children, adolescents and young/emerging adults across diverse health contexts. We invite submissions that examine how health literacy and communication can be strengthened to improve health and wellbeing amongst young people, their families and the systems that serve them.

Topics may include (but are not limited to):

· Health literacy skills of children (<10 years), adolescents (10-24 years), and young/emerging adults (up to 29 years)

· Tailored communication with diverse and priority youth populations

· Shared decision-making, youth partnership and engagement in healthcare

· Supporting health literacy and communication during healthcare transitions

· Communication in clinical, school-based, community, and public health settings

· Digital health literacy, social media, artificial intelligence, misinformation and trust amongst young people

· Education and training for healthcare providers communicating with young people

· Measurement of youth-centred communication processes, outcomes, and patient-reported experiences

· Structural and commercial determinants of health and their implications for young people’s health literacy

We encourage a wide range of methodological approaches, including qualitative, quantitative, experimental, and mixed-methods studies, as well as reviews, implementation science, participatory research, and theoretical or conceptual perspectives
