The cost of diagnostic errors: prevention and restoration
Diagnosis can be seen as the first step in a patient’s management and the outcomes of any short or long-term illness. Understandably, a diagnosis can dictate many of the plans that follow, and therefore inevitably have an impact on the patient – even after the illness has been resolved. Therefore, a timely diagnosis may be crucial to improving access to necessary treatments.
This Article Collection aims to evaluate the impact of diagnostic errors and patient outcomes related to receiving a misdiagnosis and hopes to provide practitioners with strategies they can utilize to avoid making an incorrect diagnosis.
This Article Collection will solicit manuscripts related to the following subjects. However, we welcome all submissions related to the umbrella topic of diagnostic errors.
- Management of vague symptoms and recommendations for the diagnostic timeline of ambiguous symptoms
- Impact of diagnostic errors, unnecessary treatments and excess mortality on local and national health economics
- Current developments to pre-existing and new diagnostic methods to ensure accurate diagnosis and prevent errors
- Strategies to prevent the misdiagnosis of diseases already established as ‘difficult to diagnose’
- Medical education and teaching students about misdiagnosis
- Patient outcomes and attitudes towards healthcare following misdiagnosis and potentially mistreatment
The following Article Types will be considered: basic and clinical, as well as epidemiological original research, meta-analyses, systematic and scoping reviews, narrative reviews, and commentaries.
