Artificial Intelligence Applications for the Global Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems: An Interdisciplinary Approach

In daily life, the utilization of artificial intelligence holds significant promise for addressing global challenges related to food production, food security, food quality, and food safety. In the agricultural sector, while focusing on AI-based crop production, animal breeding, and food safety, it is also essential to prioritize the comprehensive application of artificial intelligence and big data into larger processes of traditional agricultural transformation. This will help to develop economically sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural systems, better equipped to face the challenges posed by population growth, politics, and climate change.

This Article Collection aims to delve into the various applications of artificial intelligence in agriculture. Embracing an interdisciplinary framework, we welcome articles exploring the technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects of artificial intelligence across numerous applications and points in the agricultural value chain. In particular, this Collection will highlight the great significance of establishing smart, real-time, and fair monitoring and evaluation methods for the global transformation of agriculture and food systems, as well as the drastic impacts that AI can have on traditional agriculture, socio-economic systems, and the environment.

Manuscript submissions may examine the applications of machine vision technologies in precision agriculture – including autonomous harvesting robots, plant phenotyping, crop yield estimation, and plant pest and disease detection – as well as animal welfare assessment and food safety systems. Submissions may also examine the integrated use of artificial intelligence, machine learning (ML), and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to reduce water and energy consumption, develop water-energy-food-health solutions and innovations, and realize systems of smart agriculture that are technologically advanced, scientifically sound, healthy, environmentally friendly, and economical.

Dr. Yunchao Tang is working at Guangxi University and Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering. He primarily engages in interdisciplinary research and has a long-standing interest in robotics and the application of artificial intelligence. He is now Elsevier "World's Top 2% Scientists" and acts as academic editor of several SCI journals.

Dr. Fengyun Wu is working at Guangzhou College of Commerce. She primarily engages in field robotics and sensor fusion algorithms. She acts as reviewers for several SCIE journals including Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, Precision Agriculture.
