The transition from Financial Analysis to Financial Data Science

Finance academic literature, whilst relatively “young” (circa 1930’s), has seen a surge in techniques from empirical sciences over the recent years. Whilst these techniques from natural and earth sciences are not novel, they do reveal a potential multi-disciplinary approach to not just solving problems in finance but also rephrasing them to be more inclusive of jargon from other disciplines. As an example, the Adaptive Market Hypothesis by Lo (2004) combined elements from psychology, biology and other sciences to present a more realistic view of how markets function.

Understanding the transition from traditional analysis methods (typically from statistics and mathematics) to multi-disciplinary methods in Computer Science, Physics, Biology and Psychology, can assist finance academics and practitioners to understand domain specific problems with additional lenses and perspectives. This fosters collaboration between academics across disciplines and also advances knowledge within the finance domain.

This Article Collection aims to explore topics within Investments and Corporate Finance that utilise multidisciplinary techniques, primarily drawn from data science, to not just empirically answer long standing finance questions but also propose new finance theory.
