Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Policy Research in High-Income Economies: Evidence, Impact, Implementation, and the Way Forward
In high-income economies, pharmacy practice plays a pivotal role in optimizing medication use and improving patient outcomes. Pharmacists routinely conduct comprehensive medication reviews, manage chronic diseases, and provide specialized care in both community and hospital settings. As integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, pharmacists are increasingly recognized for their expertise, with strong emphasis placed on advanced education, training, specialization, and the expansion of professional roles. Several high-income countries are also moving towards pharmacist prescribing, further broadening their scope of practice. Numerous high-quality studies employing diverse research methodologies have demonstrated the value of pharmacist-led interventions. Key challenges for pharmacy practice in high-income economies include addressing healthcare disparities, managing high-cost and specialized medicines, and using artificial intelligence to improve patient outcomes.
