Valuing Lived and Living Experience: Inclusion in Psychology Research, Pedagogy and Practice

Globally, there has been an emphasis on the importance of involving people with lived and living experience of mental health and related experiences in service delivery, development and training. Such individuals have taken on key roles, from peer support specialists to policy leadership, with recognition that the voices of people with lived experience are key to mental health reform.

However, whilst the value of experts through experience has gained momentum in the mental health sector, meaningful inclusion within psychology research and education has been at a slower pace. Further, despite lived experience inclusion being regarded by the profession, within the profession there remains significant barriers to disclosure of one’s own lived experience, with growing acknowledgement that personal and systemic changes are key to build recognition and acceptance of lived experience among psychologists. Accordingly, this Article Collection aims to foster discussion, research, and inclusion efforts to reduce stigma for psychology trainees and faculty.

In this collection, entitled “Valuing Lived and Living Experience: Inclusion in Psychology Research, Pedagogy and Practice”, we are seeking contributions which explore the growing inclusion of mental health and related lived and living experiences in psychology practice, research and education. Manuscripts are welcomed from contributors who are psychology specific, part of a multidisciplinary team, or are an expert through experience. All topics relevant to the inclusion of lived and living expertise in the psychology profession are invited; manuscripts may highlight barriers and benefits, reflect on sharing our lived experiences, or showcase evidence of impact from inclusion. Innovative examples of collaborative educational practices and next steps for lived and living experience inclusion in psychology are also relevant contributions for this Article Collection.

All manuscripts submitted to this Article Collection will undergo a full peer-review; the Guest Advisor for this Collection will not be handling the manuscripts.
