Digital Technologies for Mental Health Amidst Current Global Crises: Innovation and Implementation

Digital technologies have long been touted as a force for shaping the ways in which individuals and providers engage in healthcare practices. At the core of these applications has been the capacity for digital technologies to facilitate delivery of highly disseminable, personalised, and innovative psychological assessment and treatment procedures.

Current crises, including those of an environmental, social, health and economic nature, have led to a surge in mental health issues globally. In particular, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic was considered a turning point, particularly for digital mental health. Physical restrictions and preventative measures required health professionals to rapidly adopt and implement digital technologies to support ongoing delivery of psychological services, all within a landscape of increased population distress. As a consequence, the use of digital technologies in psychological healthcare is likely here to stay. It is therefore critical to reflect on lessons learned and best practice strategies for safe and effective use and uptake of digital technologies for mental health, and specifically for the purpose of addressing these in times of crises.

This Article Collection focuses on uses of digital technology to support population and individual level psychological practices for mental health and wellbeing. Specifically, we are seeking articles that are focused on technological interventions, such as mHealth, eHealth and virtual reality programs, that target current global health crises and report on the efficacy, acceptability, utility, and/or implementation feasibility of these interventions. Any papers that report on mechanisms of change in psychological management for mental health and wellbeing that are related to the use of these interventions are welcome. We also invite papers providing systematic reviews of empirical research related to digital mental health interventions in these areas and qualitative perspectives and experiences of consumers, researchers, and practitioners in relation to this topic. The following article types will be considered for publication in the collection: original research articles; reviews; brief reports.

Keywords:

  • Digital health
  • Digital mental health
  • Health service implementation
  • e-health
  • Health technologies
