The Role of Nutrition in Healthy Aging and Its Impact on Metabolic Functions of Older Adults

The exploration of the relationship between nutrition and healthy aging and the expansion of the evidence-based knowledge on this relationship constitutes an emerging scientific topic. The Article Collection within Annals of Medicine titled ‘The Role of Nutrition in Healthy Ageing and Its Impact on Metabolic Functions of Older Adults’ aspires to provide a comprehensive and impactful scientific overview of the intersection between nutrition and aging. The Article Collection would like to give a comprehensive overview on specific metabolically related conditions and diseases (e.g., frailty, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis).

In accordance with the United Nations estimates, the global share of the population aged 65 years or over increased from 6% in 1990 to 9% in 2019. This proportion is projected to rise to 16% in 2050.  Regions with the most developed economies, namely, Europe and North America, have the highest rate of individuals aged over 65 years, currently exceeding 15%. Projections suggest that this figure may approach 25% by the year 2050.  Similarly, according to data from the World Health Organization, chronic non-communicable diseases (CNDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes accounted for 71% of global deaths in 2016. These diseases significantly impact the quality of life and life expectancy of those affected, with many of these health issues strongly linked to diet and nutrition. Thus, promoting the well-being of older adults and preventing CNDs in earlier life stages represent pivotal objectives for policymakers and healthcare systems.

The Article Collection is dedicated to covering the topic of nutrition and aging with a wide-scope and interdisciplinary approach, including the following subtopics:

  • Metabolic factors and pathways influenced by food intake and dietary patterns in older people
  • Metabolic functions and immune functions in the elderly
  • Prevention of age-related diseases, CNDs, infectious diseases, and malnutrition in older people
  • Association of nutrition with geriatric syndromes, such as frailty, sarcopenia and osteoporosis
  • Physical and physiological well-being in an aging society
  • Functional food products, fortification, health and nutrition claims in food products
  • Personalized and precision nutrition approaches in disease prevention
  • Dietary patterns in relation to healthy aging

Annals of Medicine accepts the following types of articles:

  • Research Article (systematic/meta-analysis reviews and observational studies)
  • Review Article
  • Clinical Trials
  • Protocols
  • Case Series
  • Commentary
