Healthy Eating and Non-communicable Diseases Risks in Children and Adolescents

Lifestyle medicine has [been emerging into] become a specialty in medical research and practice. It forms a triad with physical medicine and rehabilitation to prevent, treat and reverse the progression of chronic conditions. Healthy lifestyles consist of 6 core components (nutrition, physical activity, stress management, social connection, restorative sleep, and avoidance of risky substances), where healthy eating is a core part.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are associated with 41 million deaths annually, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. Each year, more than 15 million people die from a NCD between the ages of 30-69 years, 85% of these "premature" deaths occur in low-middle-income countries (LMIC). Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases and diabetes account for over 80% of all premature deaths.

People, especially children and adolescents, with unhealthy lifestyles (e.g. tobacco use, physical inactivity, harmful alcohol use, unhealthy diet) increase the risk of NCDs and death. Therefore, it’s important to investigate the role of healthy eating in the context of lifestyle as a whole to provide evidence for better medical practice and improving NCD outcomes in children and adolescents.

Authors of original research (both qualitative and quantitative), systematic reviews, and meta-analysis articles are encouraged to submit their work for consideration.
