Annals of Medicine

Beyond sustenance, food is fuel for the human body with quality and quantity impacting optimum performance. For example, food is a unique extrinsic contributor to health, wellness, and disease prevention/treatment such that food is medicine.  While Hippocrates’ adage has been in place for generations, pursuit of understanding food as medicine dominates nutrition science inquiry.

As the physiological mechanisms of foods, nutrients, and bioactive food compounds are elucidated, dietary guidelines are developed.  These guidelines are drafted by global and national entities to assist individuals in implementing dietary patterns for health and longevity.  In recent years, advanced methodologies have allowed for furthering our understanding of food beyond basic nutrition.  This article collection seeks submissions of articles contributing to the evidence of food as medicine including epidemiological/observational studies, dietary interventions, systematic/meta-analysis reviews, and clinical trials.

Areas of interest include but are not limited to the following:

• Diet- or food-specific influences on outcomes underlying chronic disease
• Dietary indices and biomarkers of health and wellness
• Dietary patterns and cardiometabolic health
• Gene-associated influences on dietary interventions
• Gut microbiome influences on dietary interventions and vice versa
• Personalized nutrition for optimizing food as medicine

Dr. Kristi Crowe-White, RD is an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Alabama.  Her research focuses on the impact of bioactive food compounds on outcomes related to cardiometabolic disease programming as well as the influence of these compounds on the gut microbiome and gut-derived metabolites.
