Diagnosis and Management of Skin, Hair, and Nail Conditions in Older Adults
Modern medicine has improved longevity, and thus the population of older adults continues to grow. Therefore, physicians must be well trained in diagnosing skin, hair, and nail conditions in the aging population.
Dermatologic conditions may present differently in older versus younger patients. In addition, older adults often suffer from co-morbidities that are important to keep in mind when devising a treatment plan. Older adults are often taking other systemic medications, so it is important to be familiar with significant drug-drug interactions with dermatologic systemic diseases. Older adults may also have limitations in flexibility, coordination, hearing, and vision that must be accounted for when prescribing therapy.
This Article Collection will cover all aspects of diagnosis and management of skin, hair, and nail conditions in older adults. We are interested in manuscripts on subtopics including, but not limited to:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Psoriasis
- Infectious diseases
- Skin cancers
- Hair loss (androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia)
- Pruritus
- Nail disease (onychomycosis, psoriasis, brittle nails)
Submissions should include diagnosis and treatment of these conditions in patients with skin of color and show diverse skin types in the figures.
