Targeting UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG6 addresses the need to ensure clean water and sanitation for all. The UN describes water and sanitation as the core of sustainable development. By making clean drinking water and sanitary practices widely available around the globe, poverty reduction, economic growth, and environmental sustainability are a key result. However, this is at risk due to factors such as climate change, soil pollution, and resource overuse.

Clean water is a crucial resource to sustain all life. In 2022, 2.2 billion people lacked access to clean drinking water and hand-washing facilities, while 3.5 billion people lacked access to safely-managed sanitation systems. As the population continues to grow, increasing pollution rate from soil, and natural disasters such as floods and droughts lead to untreated wastewater flowing back into the ecosystem. There is an urgent need to identify the pollutants and find out innovative biological and/or (bio)technological methods for tackling pollution of not only water, but also of soil. In order to meet SDG6 by 2030, access to clean drinking water must increase sixfold, acceleration of proper sanitation needs to increase fivefold, and hygiene needs to grow threefold.

In this Article Collection, All Life addresses SDG6: Clean Water and Sanitation through innovative open scientific research that can be used to further our knowledge of various threats to human health under the section “Environmental Toxicology & Health” and Bioengineering & Biotechnology. This Article Collection will accept original research articles, reviews, short communications, data notes, and commentaries on topics including, but not limited to:

  1. Toxic pollutants that threaten access to clean drinking water
  2. Monitoring water pollution using innovative sensors
  3. (Nano)Materials, Enzymes, microorganisms and plants for degrading pollutants
  4. Wastewater treatment practices
  5. Threats to hygienic practices
  6. Groundwater harvest and treatment
  7. The effects of climate change on clean water availability

­­All manuscripts submitted to this Article Collection will undergo a full peer-review; the Guest Advisor for this Collection will not be handling the manuscripts (unless they are an Editorial Board member).

Prof. Dr. Amar ABDERRAHMANI is Full Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine at Lille University. He is currently the head of the team devoted to nanomaterials for health in the institute of electronics, microelectronics and nanotechnologies. He has a multidisciplinary background including a PhD and pharmacy graduation in Molecular genetics and pharmaceutical chemistry. AA has been honoured by several Swiss awards and in 2011, of National Chair of Excellence in beta-cell biology, bioscience and diabetes. AA has been member of several scientific committees of Diabetes Association.
