Natural Products in Human and Veterinary Health: Advances and Opportunities

Natural products may provide a rich source for new drugs for the treatment and management of various diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases. Natural products can be defined as compounds produced by living organisms such as plants and microorganisms. For decades, natural products, especially from plants, have been a source of therapeutics. Examples of medicines derived from plants include aspirin and digoxin.

Natural products present challenges in terms of screening, isolation, characterization, and optimization. However, several technological advances including improved analytical techniques, the ‘omics’, CRISPR, and nanotechnology are addressing such challenges and opening up new opportunities. Further, advances in information technology have enabled natural product-based drug discovery which offers to speed-up the designing and testing of new compounds derived from natural products.

The aim of this Article Collection is to present recent progress, showcase key applications and discuss future prospects in using natural products for drug discovery in the context of human and veterinary health. The Collection emphasizes the importance of natural products as a valuable source of therapeutic agents and the need for continued research in this field. We, therefore, welcome original research articles, data notes, short communications, reviews and commentaries on topics including (but not limited to):

  • Medicinal botany
  • Isolation and biological evaluation
  • Bioinformatics applications (genomics, proteomic, metabolomics etc.)
  • Natural products and precision medicine
  • Dietary natural products and their potential to influence health and disease
  • Pharmacological activity of medicinal plants
  • Pharmacokinetics and Clinical Studies
  • Phytopharmaceuticals and herbal medicines

All manuscripts submitted to this Article Collection will undergo desk assessment and peer-review as part of our standard editorial process. Guest Advisors will not be involved in peer-reviewing manuscripts unless they are an existing member of the Editorial Board.

Please review the journal scope and author submission instructions prior to submitting a manuscript.

The deadline for submitting manuscripts is 29 February 2024.

Dr. Ryman Shoko is a Senior Lecturer of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Department of Biology, Chinhoyi University of Technology. He holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Biology and Biochemistry from the National University of Science & Technology in Zimbabwe and a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Cape Town. Dr. Shoko uses a variety of techniques to investigate the ethnopharmacology of herbal remedies of traditional healing systems. He also uses computer assisted drug discovery approaches to discover compounds from natural products with activity against schistosomiasis and other neglected tropical diseases. Dr Shoko is a member of several local and international organisations such as the Natural Products Research of Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA-Zimbabwe), and the African Society for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (ASBCB).
