Impact of pesticides in the development of non-communicable diseases
The exposure to pesticides such as herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides, has been implicated in the development of a wide range of diseases. The health effects of these compounds are detected after occupational and accidental exposures.
In addition, emerging evidence is linking exposure to pesticides to the development of non-communicable diseases after environmental exposures through diet or, in the case of residential exposures, to agricultural sprays. These effects are generally due to endocrine and metabolic disruptions, which can manifest after long-term repeated exposures. They are difficult to identify and often missed in regulatory tests.
In order to provide a platform for the discussion of these critical issues, we invite authors to submit original research and review papers investigating the contribution and the mode of action of pesticides in the development of non-communicable diseases.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- The identification of health effects of pesticides at environmentally relevant concentrations
- The regulatory health risk assessments and their validity
- Biomonitoring and environmental epidemiological studies, as well as laboratory experiments
- Identification of mechanisms of actions and intracellular key targets of pesticides
