Cell and Molecular Mechanisms of Therapy Resistance in Breast Cancer
In 2020, breast cancer (BC) was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, affecting more than 2 million women, and was the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. Some BC risk factors include aging, obesity, alcohol consumption, family history of breast cancer, history of radiation exposure, reproductive history (such as age that menstrual periods began and age at first pregnancy), smoking and postmenopausal hormone therapy. Negative clinical outcomes largely result from drug resistance, which hinders therapeutic efficiency.
The genetics of patients, together with their epigenetic profile, contribute to the resistance of chemotherapy. Chemoresistance can also arise from the cell heterogeneity of tumors, that are not targeted by drugs.
This Article Collection aims to gather primary research, data notes and review articles investigating the cell and molecular mechanisms of targeted therapy resistance in BC. We strongly encourage all in vitro and in vivo studies using transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches, including bioinformatics and clinical science. We do believe that the knowledge of these mechanisms will allow the identification of innovative strategies to overcome overt drug resistance and to substantially improve the clinical outcome of BC patients.
Potential topics include (but are not limited to):
- Genetics and genomics of drug resistance in BC
- Epigenetics of drug resistance in BC
- Tumor microenvironment, tumor cell subtypes, signaling pathways, non-coding RNAs involved in drug resistance
- Endocrine therapy and chemotherapy resistance
