Sustainable development for co-supporting economic growth and environmental health

Over the recent decades, climate change and other anthropogenic interferences with natural systems have substantially aggravated pressures on the environment. Consequently, extensive environments worldwide have experienced degradation processes, resulting in diminished ecosystem health. Among the causes of environmental deterioration, pollutant emissions, deforestation, habitat destruction, ocean acidification, and land degradation and desertification are predominant. As a result, the delivery of provisioning (e.g., food, feed, feedstock), supporting (e.g., habitats, biodiversity), regulating (e.g., organic carbon sequestration, flood control, soil erosion control), and cultural (e.g., ritual and leisure activities) services is facing tremendous challenges.

The objective of this Article Collection is to highlight the potential of alternative, environmental-friendly pathways, by discussing possible directions for sustainable development. As an inclusive Article Collection, a wide range of topics are welcome, such as renewable energy; eco-friendly building and construction; forestry and restoration of degraded lands; regenerative agriculture; ecotourism and agrotourism; ethnobotany and ethnomedicine; and alternative waste management. For each of these topics, both traditional/indigenous knowledge and contemporary/modern disciplines will be considered for publication. Further, submissions on fiscal tools such as the carbon credit market and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in developing countries (REDD+), which aim at funding projects for restoring environmental/ecological functions, may also be considered.

  • Anthropogenic impact
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Ecosystem services
  • Land restoration
  • Land-use change
