Advances in UAS Environmental Applications

Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS or drone) remote sensing has progressed rapidly in the last 20 years and impacted environmental research. Specifically, the combination of high spatial/high temporal resolution UAS data, remote sensing analysis, and GIS tools has advanced various applications ranging from crop monitoring, environmental spatial modelling, natural hazards, coastal research, vegetation biophysical characteristics estimation, and many more. This has led to a shift in how various research problems are addressed at different geographic scales in environmental research.

A collection of articles focusing on the advancement of environmental UAS remote sensing is needed given the rapid development of the field. This Article Collection is devoted to the publication of review articles and cutting-edge research papers on environmentally related research conducted with UAS, GIS, and other related advanced methods and models to analyze environmental spatial data, encapsulating the key benefits of UAS and GIS in addressing the field's major questions. This collection will serve as a reference point for researchers, scientists, and educators who are currently working or looking to work in this dynamic field.

The topics covered include but are not limited to using UAS in the following areas:

  • Environmental feature extraction
  • RGB-based indices for vegetation monitoring
  • Agricultural applications
  • Urban vegetation identification and monitoring
  • Coastal applications
  • Wetland identification and analysis
  • Local and regional climate analyses
