Advances in Smart Interfacial Science and Engineering
Smart interfacial science and engineering (SISE) is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to the scientific exploration of interfacial phenomena and the innovative design of functional interfaces. It involves uncovering the fundamental principles that govern the behavior of interfaces across multiple scales, ranging from the atomic and molecular to the macro level, and subsequently harnessing this insight to develop advanced materials, structures and systems with tailored properties for the widest range of applications. This involves domains where the manipulation and optimization of interfaces between materials are crucial, including but not limited to, intelligent robotics, wearables, advanced manufacturing and energy technologies. Overall, smart interfacial engineering aims at optimizing interactions between materials at interfaces to achieve superior performance, functionality, and adaptability across various technological and scientific domains.
This special issue aims to gather contributions that highlight the latest advances and address the key challenges in smart interfacial science and engineering, along with their wide-ranging applications. We invite submissions of cutting-edge original research and insightful reviews that explore emerging directions in this promising field. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Materials, surface morphology, mechanics and physics of contact/adhesion/friction/sealing
- Smart skins (robotic sensing, human-machine interactions, drug reduction)
- Smart coatings, packing materials, and mechanisms of attachment and detachment
- Advanced armors and structures for anti-puncture and anti-impacting
- Transfer printing, mass transfer and heterogeneous integration
- Advanced thermal/biomedical/electronic interfaces
- Wetting, antifouling, anti-icing and de-icing
- Functional interfaces in textiles and fabrics
- Composite materials
