Popular culture materials present important opportunities and challenges for archivists, institutions, and researchers. After scholars, artists, and archivists diversified definitions of the archive and the range of historical subjects, and the global consumer market for cultural products dramatically expanded, strategies employed in archiving this material have become particularly complicated. Networked and mobile information technologies of the early twenty-first century have further interfered not only with the arbitrary boundaries of nations that have conventionally funded major collections of historical documentation, but also with the very notion of materiality of the subjects of collection. With the technologies of cultural production now literally in the hands of the public, the proliferation of records to be considered and preserved continues to transform the criteria of selection and raise questions about technological competence, intellectual property, and aesthetic authority. 

As archives and records of popular culture call into question the standards of selection and preservation of materials relevant to a democratic historiography, we invite contributions from archivists, conservators, library professionals, and cultural historians from any region of the world which address these dynamics from diverse perspectives. Our goal is to create a fruitful conversation about the theoretical and the practical concerns in the creation, management, and interpretation of archives of popular culture, from the questions of ephemerality, affect, and value, to the strategies of storage, and the design of new pedagogies and teaching tools. Submissions could take the form of, for example, a case study reporting on an example of archiving popular culture material, or a theoretical discussion.

Submissions to this special issue might consider, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Definitions of “popular culture”, “archive”, and “ephemera”, and how these definitions are negotiated by different actors inside institutions and among producers and consumers of artifacts and archives
  • Questions of identification, collection, preservation, and interpretation as they pertain to popular culture archives
  • Reproduction of local, national or transnational historical narratives in popular culture archives, and the transformative potential of archival work
  • Cultural and political economies of popular culture archives
  • Conception of expertise regarding popular culture archives; whether and how standards of professionalism change
  • Intersectional politics of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class in formation and interpretation of popular culture archives
  • Determination and negotiation of value in popular culture archives
  • Community involvement in the development of popular culture archives, and the role of these archives in the formation of communities
  • Collection storage, non-traditional notions of space, and the conceptions and problems of access
  • Conservation challenges of non-traditional archival material
  • Use of popular culture archives as pedagogical resources, emerging methods and technologies of teaching, and the potential for critical pedagogies
  • Opportunities and challenges brought about by digital technologies
  • Current trends and the future of popular culture archives
  • Archive v. museum object; the potential for cross-institutional collaboration

How To Submit a Paper

Prospective authors are welcome to contact the Guest Editors, in order to discuss proposed articles for this special issue of Archives and Records scheduled for publication in Spring 2020. Timelines: Please send a 300-word proposal to the Guest Editors (e-mail addresses above) by 15 March 2019. Authors of accepted proposals will be invited by 31 March 2019 to submit a completed article through the Journal’s online system. Completed drafts of articles will be due on 31 July 2019. An invitation to submit an article does not guarantee publication in the final issue. All submissions will be double blind peer-reviewed and should be presented in line with the Archives and Records Instructions for Authors.
