The tourism industry in recent years has seen a significant transformation as a result of advancements in information and communication technologies such as IoT, mobile communicating, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. In many destinations, the availability of IoT has pushed for development of “smart cities” and “smart tourism” where tourism services and facilities share the common platform with the destinations. In addition, the recent development of smart tourism makes it possible to enhance tourism experiences, improve the efficiency of resource management, and maximize destination competitiveness.

This virtual special issue of APJTR covers recent articles of the Journal which covers state-of-the-art research articles on the topic of smart tourism and technology enhanced experiences by the tourists. You will find that this special volume covers latest findings by researchers from around the world, which reflects on the breadth and diversity of authorship in the Journal. The papers included this special volume may not be able to provide an answer of what comprises smart tourism. It does, however, offer an overview of the latest development in the topic, and how tourists’ experiences can be enhanced with technologies.
