Meet the Section Editor
April A Grant, MD FACS, Emory University School of Medicine & Grady Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Dr Grant received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residence at the Greenville Health System University Medical Center. Grant's surgical critical care and trauma surgery fellowships were undertaken at Jackson Health System and Ryder Trauma Center, University of Miami Health System, Florida. As a Fellow, she helped to establish a comprehensive ESMO program at Jackson Health System, developing clinical guidelines, policies and workflow. Additionally, Dr. Grant helped define the use of ECMO in trauma patients (a group previously thought to be too high risk for mechanical support). Grant has also participated as co-investigator in several translational research projects exploring techniques for donation after circulatory death for heart transplant and optimization of marginal lungs using ex-vivo perfusion. Her passion for transplant continues as a faculty member, where at Grady she co-chairs the Donor Advisory Council. Currently Dr Grant serves as Associate Medical Director of the Grady Surgical ICU. She actively participates in the development of management guidelines for the trauma program. She is well published and her research interests include trauma resuscitation, the use of ECMO for acute respiratory failure, ECMO and trauma induced coagulopathy and traumatic brain injury.
