Meet the Section Editors

Markus Juonala, University of Turku, Finland

Professor Markus Juonala is a specialist in internal medicine and endocrinology at the Turku University Hospital, Turku, Finland. Since 2001, he has been conducting research on longitudinal studies examining the importance of childhood risk factors on later cardiovascular health. He has had a major involvement in the development of the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort (i3C) Consortium that combines the efforts of the main longitudinal studies worldwide. In June 2014, he was appointed as Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Turku. In 2014-2015 and 2018-2019 he has been working as the Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Fellow in Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI).

Petri Kovanen Prof., Director Emeritus, Wihuri Research Institute, Helsinki, Finland

Dr. Kovanen received his medical degree and completed his experimental MD thesis on skeletal fatty acid metabolism in 1970 in the University of Basel, Switzerland. He then completed his experimental MD, PhD thesis on cholesterol metabolism of adipose tissue and received his MD, PhD degree in 1975 from the University of Helsinki. Dr. Kovanen then moved to Dallas in the United States, where he conducted his postdoctoral work (1976–1980) on LDL receptor-dependent cholesterol metabolism. His main achievement in Dallas was the demonstration of upregulation of hepatic LDL receptors as the mechanism of the statin-induced lowering of plasma LDL-cholesterol levels. Returning to Finland, Dr. Kovanen completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Helsinki. Since 1984 he has held directorship positions at the Wihuri Research Institute in Helsinki, most recently Director Emeritus since 2019.
