Advances in the Diagnosis, Monitoring, and Therapy Management of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, whose diagnostic hallmarks are represented by bradykinesia, rest tremor and rigidity. Clinical evaluation remains the primary method for diagnosis, but despite of the deep knowledge of PD phenomenology and disease course, current diagnostic criteria have limited accuracy. The lack of objective biomarkers for quantitative analysis of motor performances contributes to this limited diagnostic accuracy. However, the introduction of smart devices has opened new frontiers for movement analysis, providing a reliable model for at-home and in-clinic assessments. Moreover, clinical practice could benefit from the establishment of objective biomarkers, in terms of earlier diagnosis and improved therapeutic management.

The aim of this Article Collection is to provide an overview of recent advances in PD diagnosis and new strategies for disease management through quantitative movement analysis. It also explores the role of wearable devices and artificial intelligence in monitoring movement performance and therapy management.

For this Article Collection, the goal is to solicit submissions of any articles that offer valuable insights into Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy management. Research of interest include, but are not limited to the subtopics highlighted below:

  • Novel Diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease
  • Smart devices for quantitative analysis of motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease management
  • Artificial Intelligence in Parkinson’s disease diagnosis and monitoring
  • Closed-loop therapy for Parkinson’s disease

Annals of Medicine accepts the following types of articles:
