Intercultural Communication in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Negotiating Identity, Culture, and Digital Interaction

Artificial intelligence is transforming how people communicate across cultural, linguistic, and geographical boundaries. Intercultural encounters are increasingly mediated by generative AI, automated translation, recommendation systems, conversational agents, social media platforms, virtual influencers, and immersive digital environments.

These technologies do more than support communication. They influence which cultural narratives become visible, how identities are represented, how meaning is translated, and how individuals and communities interact across cultures. This Special Issue examines AI as an active participant in intercultural communication and considers its implications for identity, language, cultural representation, intercultural competence, inclusion, ethics, and human agency.

We welcome theoretical, empirical, methodological, and critical contributions from communication studies and related disciplines, including linguistics, media studies, education, psychology, sociology, and computer science.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Human–AI interaction across cultural contexts
  • AI-mediated interpersonal and intercultural communication
  • Conversational agents, chatbots, and intercultural dialogue
  • Machine translation and cross-cultural understanding
  • Generative AI and multilingual communication
  • Trust, credibility, authenticity, and communicative competence
  • Digital identity construction and self-representation across cultures
