Advances in automated assessment across low-resource contexts
- This special issue welcomes contributions from the STACK community and in particular presenters at the International Meeting of the STACK Community 2026.
- It brings together research and innovation in automated assessment, with a particular focus on low-resource contexts and large classes.
- The issue foregrounds work from geographically under-represented settings, including universities across Africa.
- Automated assessment can give students timely, individual feedback where student–staff ratios are high, making it especially valuable in these settings.
- Advances in artificial intelligence bring new opportunities and new challenges for automated assessment, which this issue seeks to explore.
- Both full research articles and shorter Classroom Notes (describing a pedagogical approach or resource) are welcome.
Topics include:
- designing and evaluating automated assessment;
- feedback and its effect on student learning;
- assessment at scale in large-enrolment courses;
- the use of tools in particular STACK;
- the role of AI in automated assessment; and
- equity of access to assessment.
Submission Instructions
Types of article
- Full research article: has a clear research question, structured so that each section contributes to answering it — Introduction (motivates the question), Method (the approach taken), Results (the relevant findings), and Discussion (the answer, limitations, and further work).
- Classroom Note: describes a pedagogical approach or resource. It does not need to contain original research, and there is no requirement for an explicit research question or for data and analysis.
Preparing your manuscript
- Prepare your manuscript following the journal’s Instructions for Authors, including the length, formatting and referencing conventions for your article type.
- Authors must follow the journal’s policy on the use of AI in preparing and writing submissions.
- Authors new to submitting international manuscripts will be provided with mentoring from an international academic.
Abstracts / expressions of interest
- Submit a short abstract (around 250 words) by 31 October 2026, by email to guest editor Ian Jones ([email protected]), stating your intended article type.
- The guest editors will confirm suitability and arrange support for authors ahead of full submission.
Submitting your full manuscript
- When submitting, select “Advances in automated assessment across low-resource contexts” as the special issue in at the "Manuscript" step of the submission process.
Expected publication
- Accepted articles are published online in the journal’s ‘latest articles’ section soon after acceptance.
- The completed special issue is expected to be published in April 2028.
