Onconephrology Update: Emerging Insights and Evolving Practice

Breakthroughs in cancer treatment have improved long-term outcomes of patients with various malignancies. However, cancer and antineoplastic therapies can affect the kidney throughin various pathophysiological mechanisms, leading to acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, electrolyte and acid base abnormalities and proteinuria. These effects paved the way for the inception and evolution of the “Onconephrology” discipline, a captivating subspecialty of Nephrology, emerging from the intersection of Cancer and Kidney Disease.

With advancements in the treatment of cancer, nephrologists are becoming core members of the care team of patients with malignancies. Onconephrology equips nephrologists with the information and tools needed to understand the mechanistic pathophysiological mechanisms of kidney affection in cancer patients, the necessary diagnostic workup and available treatment options, to help improve outcomes in this patient population. Moreover, many novel anti-neoplastic therapies require medication dosing in patients with chronic kidney disease, making this onconephrology a core subspecialty of nephrology.

This collection will encompass the following topics:

  • Acute Kidney Injury in Cancer Patients
  • Nephrotoxic Effects of Traditional Chemotherapeutic Agents
