Soil Health and Sustainable Nitrogen Management for Future Generations

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition (SSPN) related to the 10th International Nitrogen Conference (N2026). Authors are invited to submit manuscripts related to the topics discussed at the conference. We welcome submissions from N2026 participants as well as from the wider scientific community.

The 10th International Nitrogen Conference (N2026) will be held in Kyoto, Japan, from 2 to 6 November 2026 under the theme “Sustainable Nitrogen Management for Future Generations.” N2026 aims to bring together researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other stakeholders to share scientific knowledge and discuss pathways toward sustainable nitrogen management.

Further information on N2026 is available at https://n2026.org/

Among the broad topics addressed in N2026, Soil Health is recognized as one of the key foundations for sustainable nitrogen management. Soils play central roles in nitrogen cycling, agricultural productivity, environmental quality, and ecosystem resilience. Advances in soil science and plant nutrition are therefore essential for balancing food production and environmental sustainability under increasing nitrogen pressures from human activities.

This Special Issue will feature high-quality scientific contributions focusing on soil- and plant-related aspects of sustainable nitrogen management. We particularly welcome studies related to agroecosystems, soil functions, nutrient management, environmental quality, and science-policy-practice interfaces. We also welcome interdisciplinary contributions connecting soil science and plant nutrition with broader sustainability challenges.

Topics of the Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Soil health and nitrogen dynamics in agricultural ecosystems
  • Soil-plant interactions related to nitrogen use and loss
  • Sustainable nutrient management for crop production
  • Nitrogen effects on soil functions, biodiversity, and ecosystem services
  • Nitrogen management and environmental quality in terrestrial ecosystems
  • Field observations, experiments, and modeling studies on soil nitrogen processes
  • Integrated approaches linking soil science, plant nutrition, and sustainable nitrogen management
  • Science-policy-practice interfaces related to soil and nitrogen management

Submission Instructions

At least one author is expected to participate in N2026. Manuscripts related to N2026 presentations and discussions are particularly welcome.

Please select “Special Issue for N2026” as the designation of the manuscript during submission.

Articles in this Special Issue will be published as Free to View.

In addition, up to five articles whose corresponding authors are not members of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition will be eligible for a waiver of the $150 submission fee.

Furthermore, invited review articles specifically commissioned from N2026 keynote speakers will be eligible for waivers of the submission fee, basic page charges, and excess page charges.
