Sustainable Agricultural Systems under Climate Change and Economic Transformation

Climate change and changing economic structures are causing big changes in agricultural systems all over the world. Higher temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are changing how productive agriculture is, how resources are used, and how food supply chains work. At the same time, globalization, new technologies, urbanization, and changes in how labor and capital are allocated are changing the way agricultural systems work and adapt. These interconnected forces are affecting not only decisions made on farms but also the larger agri-food systems, such as how food is grown, distributed, and eaten. The goal of this Article Collection is to look at how climate change and economic change affect the development of sustainable agricultural systems. It will focus on resilience, efficiency, and long-term sustainability in a variety of regional and socioeconomic contexts.

To make sure that everyone has enough food and that development is sustainable, we need to understand how climate change and changes in the economy work together. Environmental stressors can have a big effect on agricultural systems, and how well they can adapt depends a lot on the economy, the quality of institutions, and how quickly technology is improving. Not dealing with these problems could make food insecurity, income inequality, and environmental degradation worse, especially in developing economies. On the other hand, policies and new ideas that are well thought out can make people more resilient, boost productivity, and encourage the sustainable use of resources. This subject is particularly pertinent within the framework of international obligations to climate mitigation and adaptation, including the Sustainable Development Goals and climate accords. This Article Collection hopes to give policymakers, researchers, and practitioners evidence-based information that will help them come up with strategies that balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.

This Article Collection welcomes interdisciplinary contributions that examine sustainable agricultural systems through empirical, theoretical, and policy-oriented perspectives. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Climate change impacts on agricultural productivity and food security
  • Adaptation and mitigation strategies in agriculture
  • Sustainable resource management
  • Technological innovation and digital agriculture
  • Structural transformation and rural development
  • Agricultural trade and globalization
  • The role of institutions, policies, and financial systems in promoting sustainability

Studies employing advanced econometrics methods, such as panel data models, nonlinear approaches, and machine learning techniques, are particularly encouraged, as are case studies and comparative analyses across regions. The Collection invites original research articles, review papers, and policy analyses that contribute to advancing knowledge and practical solutions within the scope of food and agriculture systems.
