The Collection aims to discuss clinically focused papers highlighting novel successes in precision medicine, from innovations at a molecular level all the way through to diagnostics and treatments in a variety of settings (including low resource).

Possible subtopics include:
  • Novel multi-omic molecular / biomarker technologies for diagnosis, treatment response and prognosis in hepatology and gastroenterology
  • Repurposing and recycling in low-resource settings
  • Novel imaging technologies
  • Novel diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic tools
  • Wearable technologies
  • Robotics
  • Point-of-care diagnostics
  • Novel therapeutics
  • Precision medicine
  • Digital health and artificial Intelligence in hepatology and gastroenterology
  • Remote patient care and telehealth / telemedicine
  • Novel endoscopy techniques.
  • Psychosocial treatment innovations
  • New strategies and improvements in healthcare system approaches

The collection spans both Open Access and hybrid journals including: Hepatic Medicine: Evidence and Research, Clinical and Experimental GastroenterologyColorectal CancerExpert Review of Gastroenterology & HepatologyGastrointestinal Oncology: Management and CareHepatic Oncology and Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology.

Professor Henning Grønbæk is a clinician-scientist with extensive expertise in inflammatory liver diseases, including metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MASH), autoimmune liver diseases and primary liver cancer. His research has centered on the immunopathogenesis of chronic liver disease, with a particular focus on macrophage biology and macrophage-derived biomarkers as tools for assessing disease severity, treatment response, and prognosis.

Professor Knut E A Lundin is Professor of Medicine and Head of Clinical Education, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway and senior consultant gastroenterologist at the endoscopy unit at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet. He works with Professor Ludvig M Sollid on the immunobiology and clinical aspects of coeliac disease (CeD). His seminal paper in Journal of Experimental Medicine in 1993 on gluten specific T cells from the small intestine has led to in-detail dissection of the immunopathogenesis of the disease. Focus has also been paid to non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, “regular” and “complicated” CeD, refractory CeD, inflammatory bowel disease, clinical nutrition and other GI disorders in a tertiary referral hospital setting. He has training in all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Professor Purnima Bhat is a gastroenterologist/hepatologist and immunology scientist at the Canberra Hospital and Australian National University. She is the current Chair of the World Endoscopy Organisation African Outreach Committee. Her research investigates gut-liver interactions in gastrointestinal, metabolic, and inflammatory disorders. She has published over 30 original research articles and reviews in scientific journals including Nature MedicineGutCell Death & DiseaseMolecular Cell BiologyDigestive EndoscopyPLOS Pathogens, and Journal of Virology, and she holds two patents derived from her work. Her ongoing projects traverse the spectrum of science to bedside care from immune regulatory pathways in colon cancer and liver disease, to translational medicine in the development of affordable point-of-care tests, and GI health delivery and teaching in low-resourced and remote environments
