Next-Generation Green Chemistry: Sustainable Innovations for a Circular and Climate-Resilient Future

Green chemistry has emerged as a transformative approach to designing chemical processes and products that minimize environmental impact while maximizing efficiency and sustainability. Rooted in the principles of waste prevention, atom economy, safer solvents, and energy efficiency, green chemistry is reshaping how scientists and industries approach innovation. In recent years, the field has evolved beyond pollution reduction to embrace systemic solutions that integrate renewable resources, circular economy strategies, and low-carbon technologies.

This Article Collection, “Next-Generation Green Chemistry: Sustainable Innovations for a Circular and Climate-Resilient Future,” aims to highlight cutting-edge research and emerging trends that redefine sustainable chemical practices. It focuses on interdisciplinary approaches that combine chemistry with materials science, biotechnology, and engineering to address global environmental challenges.

The urgency of climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation demands rapid advancements in sustainable technologies. Traditional chemical processes are often energy-intensive, reliant on fossil resources, and associated with hazardous waste generation. Green chemistry provides a pathway to mitigate these issues by enabling cleaner production methods and safer product design.

Recent global efforts toward carbon neutrality and sustainable development goals (SDGs) have further elevated the importance of green chemistry. Innovations such as biomass valorization, CO2 utilization, green catalysis, and solvent-free synthesis are not only environmentally beneficial but also economically advantageous. These advancements help industries transition toward circular systems where waste is minimized and materials are continuously reused.

Moreover, the integration of digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, is accelerating the discovery of sustainable materials and processes. As industries and policymakers increasingly prioritize sustainability, there is a growing need for scalable, practical, and impactful green chemistry solutions.

This Article Collection seeks to capture these advancements and inspire further research that bridges the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world application.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives in (but not limited to) the following areas:

  • Green synthesis and sustainable reaction design
  • Biomass conversion and bio-based chemicals
  • CO2 capture, utilization, and valorization
  • Green catalysis (heterogeneous, homogeneous, and biocatalysis)
  • Sustainable solvents and solvent-free processes
  • Energy-efficient and low-carbon chemical processes
