Religion and Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Agency, and the Human Future

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has precipitated a paradigm shift in the domain of moral, cultural, and metaphysical inquiries that have been the subject of prolonged study within the realms of religion and philosophy. The accelerated proliferation of generative and autonomous systems has necessitated a re-examination of the boundaries of agency, responsibility, and human creativity. This compendium of articles invites contributions from a diverse array of academic disciplines, including theology, philosophy, ethics, religious studies, anthropology, and social thought within the humanities, with a view to elucidating the manner in which religious traditions, moral worldviews, and cultural narratives interact with AI-driven transformation. Contributors are encouraged to explore the way emergent technologies shape the conceptualizations of personhood, consciousness, and divine creation, and the extent to which they challenge established morality.

The intersection of religion and artificial intelligence is the key to understanding technological changes in human terms. Religious and ethical frameworks provide valuable insights into responsibility, justice and the common good. The humanities are vital for understanding the moral imagination of the digital age. They provide us with the tools to understand how meaning, trust and transcendence evolve in algorithmic environments. This collection drives interdisciplinary discussion on these issues and promotes a diverse and informed approach to AI's moral and spiritual effects.

We welcome submissions that address, among others:

  • philosophical interpretations of personhood, agency, and creation in relation to AI;
  • moral responsibility and algorithmic decision-making from religious or ethical perspectives;
  • digital spirituality and ritual innovation in AI-mediated environments;
  • comparative studies of transhumanism, posthumanism, and eschatology;
  • empirical and cultural analyses of attitudes toward AI among faith-based and secular communities.

Both theoretical and empirical contributions are encouraged. The Collection aims to bring together diverse methodologies and perspectives to advance a deeper understanding of how faith and technology shape the human future.
