About the role

The Assistant Editors will work closely with the journal’s editor or one of the associate editors to develop their editorial leadership skills. This experience will include mentoring and professional development for the Assistant Editors. Each Assistant Editor will be mentored to serve as the action editor on 10 to 12 new submissions over the course of the year. This process will include screening manuscripts for appropriateness, identifying reviewers, making an editorial recommendations or decisions based on reviews, and shepherding the manuscript through to publication if accepted, all with mentorship from the editor or associate editor. Assistant Editors will be credited and officially recognized on the journal masthead. By the end of this experience, Assistant Editors will become prepared and well positioned to serve on editorial boards in the future as Associate Editors and eventually Editors at top-tiered journals.

About the Journal

Early Education and Development (EE&D) is a multi-disciplinary professional journal that publishes primarily empirical research on the links between early childhood education and children's development from 3 to 8 years old. It is international in scope and designed to emphasize the implications of research and solid scientific information for practice and policy. EE&D is designed for researchers and practitioners involved in preschool and education services for children and their families. It is informative for child development specialists; developmental, school, and child clinical psychologists; early childhood and special educators; daycare and special education administrators' and child and family policymakers.

EE&D is a connecting link between the research community in early education and child development and school district early education programs, daycare systems, and special needs preschool programs. It is a publication established as a continuing forum for research and general policy articles in the rapidly growing area of early education services for the preschool child.

The scope of EE&D includes normal, at-risk, and special needs children, preschool and daycare programs, research on remedial programs, instructional and developmental techniques, school district and community policies, kindergarten screening, assessment devices and approaches, parental role and competencies, staff competencies, social and physical environment, school readiness, and early education and intervention.

Key Skills and Attributes

Assistant Editors are open to qualified candidates who have completed their education/training and are no more than 10 years postdoctoral. Candidates may hold a position at the rank of assistant professor (or equivalent, such as a research scientist); individuals in non-academic positions and suitable qualifications are also eligible. Qualified candidates may have experience conducting peer reviews, and expertise in topics relevant to early childhood education and developmental science. We also look for evidence and track-record of reliable judgment, excellent accountability, strong professional communication skills, and strong organization and self-management skills.

Interested and qualified candidates should upload a letter of interest introducing themselves, their expertise, and an explanation of their interest in and appropriateness for the position, including how their participation in the program will contribute to the journal’s advancement (no more than 2 pages), along with a copy of their CV, no later than October 1, 2025. Appointments for Assistant Editors will be made in November or December 2025, and positions will begin January 1, 2026.
