New Therapeutics for Breast Cancer Treatment
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women and the second leading cause of cancer related death. It is a molecularly diverse disease. Heterogeneity can be observed in a wide range of cell types with varying morphology and molecular traits. The heterogeneity of this disease presents a big challenge in its therapeutic treatment.
Guidelines generally determine the treatment of breast cancer according to cancer subtypes: for example, hormone receptor-positive (luminal), triple-negative (basal-like), and HER2-overexpressing breast cancer.
Besides the traditional treatments, such as hormone therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, innovative approaches have improved breast cancer treatments, which comprise targeted therapies and immunotherapy. Among them, potent therapeutics based on molecular pathways, such as small-molecule inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates, or on immune modulation, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, CAR T cell therapy, and cancer vaccines. Tumor microenvironment -targeted therapies may also contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies.
The aim of this special collection is to provide an overview of clinical developments and recent advancements in targeted therapies and immunotherapies for breast cancer treatment. The successes, challenges, and perspectives will be critically reported and discussed, covering new and emerging therapeutic areas and ongoing clinical trials that may result in further improvement in breast cancer outcomes.
