Advancing Teaching and Learning through Research
The editorial team of SCHOLE: A Journal of Leisure Studies and Recreation Education invites submissions for a special issue focused on scholarship related to teaching and learning in leisure, parks, recreation, sport, tourism, and related fields.
This special issue provides an opportunity for scholars, with priority given to graduate students and faculty who have yet to earn tenure, to revise manuscripts that have previously been reviewed but not found a fit in other journals. We invite prospective authors to adapt their research to contribute to discussions on pedagogy, curricula, and mentorship in higher education to support learning in leisure, parks, recreation, sport, tourism, and related fields. We encourage you to consider ways that your research will support student growth and learning in ways that advance our current understanding of events, theories, and experiences.
SCHOLE is dedicated to disseminating research and insights that advance the scholarship of teaching and learning in leisure studies and affiliated disciplines. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles that explore undergraduate and graduate education, covering topics such as innovative teaching strategies, curriculum development, experiential learning, mentorship, and the broader impact of educational practices.
Special Issue Focus
This special issue seeks to provide a space for manuscripts that, with revision, can meaningfully contribute to discussions on effective teaching and learning. Submissions may address (but are not limited to):
- Course and curriculum innovations
- Case studies of experiential and applied learning
- Assessment strategies and learning outcomes
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings
- Student engagement and faculty mentorship practices
Peer Review Process
Authors are encouraged to attend drop-in support sessions with members of the Associate Editor team prior to submitting their papers. This will allow you to receive support, mentorship, and guidance as you engage in the writing process and enhance the review process experience. Drop-in sessions will be provided at the following times*:
- June 24th - 8am-9am ET
- June 25th - 2pm-3pm ET
- August 4th - 10am-11am ET
- August 5th - 1pm-2pm ET
*If the times become filled and you would like a consultation, contact us at scholejournal.com.
Register for a session by completing this form. The times in June are ideal for those scholars with developed papers with previous reviewer comments, allowing the co-editors to give you more specific feedback for a strong Schole submission.
All submissions will undergo an initial review by the editor or designate, followed by a double-anonymous peer review by two referees. The goal is to support authors in refining their work to align with the journal’s mission of advancing teaching and learning scholarship.
Submission Guidelines
Authors should revise their previously reviewed manuscripts to clearly demonstrate their relevance to teaching and learning in leisure, parks, recreation, sport, tourism, and related fields. Manuscripts must conform to the journal’s formatting and citation requirements. Submission options include research papers, learning activities, and (NEW!) research notes*.
*Research notes - Submissions that are shorter than research articles (research notes are 2,000–4,000 words), and share preliminary findings, methodological insights, case studies, or conceptual developments that do not fit well in a research article format. Research notes are designed to be more concise and may focus on a specific aspect of a larger study or early-stage results. Structurally, they are similar to research papers including abstract, methods, and discussion, but more concise.
