Medical Education in the Global South: Lessons Learned and Opportunities to Improve

Increasing globalization necessitates a health workforce that understands and recognize the value of diverse health practices and cultural health attitudes. The global south is rich in providing contextual innovations in medical education to ensure that the doctors they train are capable to provide care for the health needs of their populations. For example, Latin America is well-known for driving the creation of the field of social medicine, recognizing that social determinants of health are just as important to address as physical determinants of health long before the global north. We are glad to announce a new Article Collection focused on increasing the voice of authors who conduct research in medical education and teach medical students throughout the global south.

It is well-known that health researchers and medical education researchers from the global south are under-represented in global north journals and that reviewer and editor biases plays a major role in this phenomenon. This article collection aims to rectify and address this injustice and provide an avenue for global south researchers to submit their important medical education research in a global forum.

Any aspect of medical education that fits the scope of the journal is welcome. We welcome short reports to publish important new results, rapid communications describing innovations within medical education, scoping reviews, systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses, research articles for original research, and data notes.
